Federal Serverance Pay Law???

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Seeing tons, and tons of companies laying their employees off, Why isn’t their a FEDERAL (not State) severance law? Yes they can collect unemployment for about 8 weeks @ only 80% of thier wages, which isn’t much.
A law, which would REQUIRE ALL companies to pay severance pay to all employees (not just managment) who are being layed-off.
Example:
1 year of service==3 months severance pay (100%) of wages.
2 years of service==4 months of severance pay
3-4 years of service=5 months
5+years of service= 6 months
20+ years of service= 8 months
And after the severance had ended, if the employee had not found work then they can be entitled for unemployment aswell…This way most people can keep their insurance, houses, cars(s), and have less stress, than just being layed-off without anything at all.
Why is it just the Higer managment that get severance pay?? Do these companies realize that employees are what makes the company? People who are working for nothing get the raw end of the deal!!! And this law would also pertain to being fired aswell as being layed-off.. Cause I realize how crappy employers are about paying. THey would try to find reasons to fire their employees rather than laying them off…In this case the employer WILL have to have a good reason for the firing to dispute the severance pay, and unemployment. WRITTEN of cource and with the employee’s concent. What do you think???????

There is no such law because people are free to negotiate their own contracts. If there was such a law that would interfere with your ability to negotiate a higher rate of pay. You can negotiate a contract for a specific period of time in which you cannot be fired and cannot quit. Ballplayers do it all the time. Then, when someone fires you they have to pay the contract rate, and when you quit prematurely you are also liable for the breach of contract. Your proposal would be one-sided so that you remain free to quit without notice and without penalty of any sort, but the employer is bound. And what about those that are fired because of things like embezzlement? They deserve severance pay?
